Procedure

  1. Patient supine with hip flexed 90° and knee flexed 90°
  2. Examiner palpates around the knee joint line and proceeds to flex and extend the knee while palpating the joint

Interpretation

Positive Steinmann’s Test

Pain with movement and crepitus: Meniscal lesion, osteochondritis dissecans (possibly), ligament sprain

Clinical Notes

This maneuver is essentially passive knee ROM with the examiner palpating the joint (a useful technique to employ with all passive ROM procedures)
