Procedure

  1. Patient standing on one leg
  2. Examiner instructs patient to hop in place
  3. Examiner observes for signs of pain or discomfort

Interpretation:

Positive Single Leg Hop

  1. Hip pain: Hip joint pathology, arthritis, femoral neck or head fracture
  2. Local femoral, tibial, fibular or calcaneal pain: Pathology in the region corresponding to the pain

Clinical Notes

This maneuver is useful as a general screen to help localize the specific location for a detailed regional physical exam.
