Procedure

  1. Patient supine with leg straight
  2. Examiner sweeps hands down the patient’s quadriceps muscles from superior to inferior in a “milking” motion in an attempt to force fluid to gather around the patella.

Interpretation

Positive Patellar Sweep Test

Excessive fluid end or patellar elevation: Knee swelling/edema
