Indications:

Costoclavicular Maneuver test is a shoulder examination used to detect Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Procedure:

  1. Patient seated, examiner bilaterally palpates radial pulse & pulls patient’s arms into extension (“exaggerated military posture”)

Interpretation:

Positive Diminished pulse → costoclavicular TOS

Positive Arm pain, numbness, tingling → TOS of neurologic nature

This test provides particularly relevant information in patient’s who display symptoms while wearing backpacks or other heavy items around the shoulders.
