Indications:

Back Rub test is a shoulder examination used to determine shoulder girdle and rotator cuff dysfunctions.

Procedure:

  1. Patient seated or standing, examiner instructs patient to place hand inferiority behind their back & slide it horizontally as far as possible

Interpretation:

Positive Pain & inability to perform motion → rotator cuff pathology, ipsilateral coracobrachialis MFTPs, glenoid labrum lesion

Clinical notes:

Patients should be able to reach so their metacarpalphalangeal joint slide past the midline of their back
